The European safety norms are the minimum requirements that are placed on safety or work shoes. The norm your shoes must satisfy depends on your work environment. The exact criteria for the different norms may be found here. For all of our shoes, the valid norm is stated on this website as well as on the label of the shoe itself.

Two norms

Bata Industrials produces specific shoes that satisfy the norm that is relevant for you: EN ISO 20345 for safety shoes, EN ISO 20347 for occupational shoes, ESD, BS7971. The difference is that EN ISO 20345 shoes have a protective toecap, EN ISO 20347 shoes do not. Both types of shoes also satisfy all of the requirements for the relevant norm. Bata Industrials safety shoes satisfy the EN ISO 20345 safety norm: this means they have an EN 12568:2010 safety toecap that can withstand 15,000 Newtons (1500 kilos) of compression, and have an impact strength of 200 Joules. Professional shoes do not offer this specific level of protection. The aforementioned norms are divided into various classifications.

EN ISO 20345

The letter ‘S (Safety)’ is used for EN ISO 20345. This norm has the following classifications:

SB: Safety shoes for occupational use with safety toecaps, can withstand an impact up to 200 Joules and compression of 15 kN. SB shoes also satisfy a whole list of criteria, including many different quality standards for shaft and sole, comfort requirements, minimum slip resistance and oil resistance.
S1: See SB plus anti-static properties, and energy-absorbing and closed heel.
S1P: See S1 plus perforation-resistant mid-sole.
S2: See S1 plus upper with a certain maximum water permeability and water absorption.
S3: See S2 plus perforation-resistant mid-sole and outsole with a certain quantity of tread

EN ISO 20347

The letter ‘O (Occupational)’ is used for the EN ISO 20347 norm. This norm has the following classifications:

OB: Shoes for professional use without safety toecap. OB shoes also satisfy a whole list of properties, including many different quality standards for shaft and sole, comfort requirements, minimum slip resistance and oil resistance.
01: See OB plus anti-static properties, and energy-absorbing and closed heel.
01P: See O1 plus perforation-resistant mid-sole.
02: See O1 plus upper with a certain maximum water permeability and water absorption.
03: See O2 plus perforation-resistant mid-sole and outsole with a certain quantity of tread.

Other specific requirements

In addition to the properties that fall within the standard classification, our products also have other specific properties including insulation from heat and cold, heat-resistance, specific slip resistance, and water repellent.

Higher standards

In many cases, Bata Industrials places higher demands on its shoes and socks than is required for standardisation. In most cases, our products far exceed the criteria required for these standards. Our products are certified by officially recognised institutions, and during the development and quality control procedures carried out during the production process (ISO 9001), we conduct most of the tests in our own SATRA-accredited A-status laboratory. Our products are also delivered with the corresponding CE certificate. This is the proof that the shoe satisfies the norm.
